Topic
Nonverbal Expressions of Identity: Signals of Community and Belonging
Date & Time
Selected Sessions:
Mar 11, 2025 03:00 PM
Description
This session discusses how certain nonverbal expressions of identity (from bold performances like drag to subtle symbols such as painted nails or piercings) serve as meaningful cues of safety, acceptance, and belonging. It highlights the ways individuals communicate aspects of their identity through visual and behavioral signals, fostering connection and solidarity within and across communities. Community-created spaces and settings (e.g., Pride; drag shows; LGBTQ+ cafes) and identity symbols (e.g., pride flags for Queer identities; the sunflower for invisible disabilities; the infinity sign for autism) underscore the intersection of visibility, recognition, and advocacy. The session will focus on the impact of these nonverbal cues and expressions in shaping inclusive, identity-affirming spaces and advancing the recognition of diverse identities in public contexts.
